A Riad in Marrakech is the old traditional Moroccan house that you will find in the old city or the Medina. No two Riads in Marrakech are identical. Riads are very deceiving from the outside, with little windows and usually a solid wood front door. Inside youd be amazed to find a beautiful courtyard usually with a fountain in the middle. Usually planted around the Riad will be various trees. The rooms of the Riad are usually small and narrow. Some Riads in Marrakech Medina are hundreds of years old. Most Riads in Marrakech are two stories high, some are three stories high with balconies overlooking the garden and terraces with views across the rooftops of Marrakech.
Most Riads in Marrakech are in the Medina. Historically all the people of Marrakech lived in the Medina. Over the past 30 years or so, as the City of Marrakech has grown, owners of these Riads have started selling them and moving into newer and more modern parts of the Marrakech. That is why many Marrakech Riads are now owned by foreigners, who have renovated them and converted them into Maison d’htes or Guest Houses. Unlike Hotels in Marrakech, a Guest House means that you are actually a guest in a Moroccan house with a Moroccan family. That’s why many Riads in Marrakech do not have TVs in the bedrooms, there is however, a TV room in most Riads where you can sit with other guests of the Riad and watch TV. Riads in the Medina of Marrakech tend to have a distinctive aura. The narrow streets of the medina that you have to pass through to get to the Riad do not prepare you for the tranquil and luxurious setting of a Riad in Marrakech.
Not all the Riads in Marrakech are traditional and not all of them are in the Medina of Marrakech. There are some extremely Luxurious and ‘Modern’ Riads in Marrakech. These Riads are practically run like a luxury boutique hotel where you can expect to be pampered to the full and where the decor is more what you expect to find in a boutique hotel in Paris or London. Many luxury Riads have a swimming pool, a spa, a restaurant, are close to a golf course and the service is second to none. If you fancy something less traditional, you will find one of the many Riads in Marrakech that will meet your taste.
A holiday to Marrakech is not complete with out staying in Riad. Marrakech is not a place where it’s a good idea to skimp on accommodation. Your Marrakech holiday will very much be centred around the Riad. It is in the Riad that you will get a real sense of the East and the Charm of living in the Medina of Marrakech.
An alternative to staying in a Riad in Marrakech is to stay in a Hotel in Marrakech. Many Hotels in Marrakech are actually designed to resemble a Riad. You’ll find a water fountain in the middle of a courtyard, which is a very similar design to what you would find in Marrakech Riad.
